Our History

Harold Currie

Harold Currie qualified as an electrical mechanic in 1951, working for the SEC on the Hydro Electric Scheme at Mt Bogong. In July 1952 he returned to Benalla and became a partner in Worboys, Banfield and Currie Electrical Contractors. The business operated out of Harold and Edna’s back shed at 69 Salisbury St. In 1956 a new premises was built at 140 Bridge Street and the business moved into that location.

In 1974 Harold and his wife Edna started HN and ER Currie Electrical Contractor, with the Registered Electrical Contractors Licence number 1053, once again operating from 69 Salisbury Street. In 1981 Graeme and his wife Joni returned from Bendigo so that Graeme could give Harold a hand. Graeme began a mature age apprenticeship with his father, working for him until in 1985 when Graeme and Joni became partners in the business. After Harold’s retirement in 1992, Graeme and Joni bought the business and formed Graeme Currie Electrical Contractor Pty Ltd in October 1992, operating from 8 Goodenia Drive.

In 2006 after finishing school, Graeme and Joni’s son Toby began his apprenticeship with the company. In 2017, Toby and his wife Alyce bought the business from Graeme and Joni, operating it from 57 Grant Drive. Today as a third generation family business, Graeme Currie Electrical Contractor Pty Ltd REC 1053 continues a 48 year history. It currently operates with 3 qualified electricians, a mature age apprentice and a part time administration officer.
